Paulo Pécora nació en Buenos Aires, Argentina, en 1970. Es periodista y cineasta. Cursó la Licenciatura en Periodismo en la Universidad del Salvador y la Licenciatura en Cinematografía en la Universidad del Cine de Buenos Aires (FUC), donde obtuvo el título de Director Cinematográfico.

Escribió, dirigió y produjo los largometrajes "El sueño del perro" (2008) y "Marea baja" (2013), además del mediometraje experimental "Las Amigas" (2013) y una treintena de cortometrajes y videoclips.

Muchos de esos trabajos fueron exhibidos en retrospectivas dedicadas a su obra en el Buenos Aires Festival Internacional de Cine Independiente (Bafici), el Festival de Cine de Montevideo (Uruguay), el Festival de Cine Independiente de Mar del Plata (Marfici), el Festival de Cine de Toulouse (Francia), el Festival de Cine Argentino en París-La Sudestada (Francia), el Festival Curta Cinema de Río de Janeiro (Brasil), el Festival de Villa de Leyva (Colombia), Festival Transterritorial de Cine Under (Buenos Aires, Rosario y Quilmes), el XI Festival Tandil Cine, el Festival Piriápolis de Película (Uruguay), el Festival FestiFreak (La Plata) y el Palais de Glace de Buenos Aires.

El sueño del perro (2008) fue su primer largometraje y contó con el apoyo de la Universidad del Cine de Buenos Aires (FUC) y con el interés del Instituto Nacional de Cine y Artes Audiovisuales (Incaa).

La película se estrenó comercialmente en 2009 en el Museo de Arte Latinoamericano de Buenos Aires (Malba), en la sala ArteCinema y en el Espacio Incaa KM 0, Cine Gaumont, luego de lo cual se exhibió en varias salas de ciudades del interior del país.

Antes había sido exhibida en un ciclo organizado por la revista Haciendo Cine en la Alianza Francesa de Buenos Aires, en un ciclo organizado por La Nave de los Sueños en la Biblioteca Nacional y también en el Malba, en el marco de la muestra organizada por el Proyecto de Cine Independiente (PCI), asociación de productores y cineastas independientes a la que pertenece.

El sueño del perro fue proyectada por primera vez en público en 2008 en la Competencia Argentina del X Buenos Aires Festival Internacional de Cine Independiente (Bafici) y luego compitió en la sección oficial del tercer Festival de Cine Latinoamericano de San Pablo (Brasil), en la competencia Cineastas del Presente del Festival de Locarno (Suiza), en la sección oficial del Festival de Leeds (Inglaterra) y en la sección oficial del Festival de Trieste (Italia), donde obtuvo el Premio a la Mejor Fotografía.

La película también participó del Festival de Cine de Saladillo, el Festival Transterritorial de Cine Under y el Festival de Cine Argentino-La Sudestada en París (Francia), donde ganó el premio "Découverte du Jeune Cinéma Argentin" entregado por estudiantes avanzados de la escuela de cine Femis.

También compitió en el segundo Festival Internacional de Cine de Gualeguaychú, Entre Ríos, donde obtuvo el Premio Revelación y el Premio a la Mejor Película, y el Festival de Artes Audiovisuales de La Plata (Fesaalp), donde ganó el Premio a la Mejor Película y el Premio a la Mejor Fotografía.

Gracias al proyecto preparatorio de El sueño del perro, Pécora fue becado por la Fundación Typa para participar en 2004 de su taller de desarrollo de proyectos. Participó del primer Talent Campus Latinoamericano que la Universidad del Cine, el Bafici y el Festival de Berlín organizaron en 2005 en Buenos Aires.

En 2005 estuvo en la competencia oficial de guiones inéditos del Festival del Nuevo Cine Latinoamericano de La Habana. Y en 2006 compitió en el Produire au Sud, organizado por la Embajada de Francia y el Festival de Nantes en el marco del octavo Bafici.

Con un breve ensayo preparatorio para su película, que filmó en las islas del delta del Río Paraná, obtuvo el Premio Signis al mejor cortometraje del Concurso de Postproducción 2007, que recibió en setiembre de ese año en el marco del Festival Internacional de Cine de San Sebastián (España).

En 2009, el póster de El sueño del perro -realizado especialmente por el artista plástico Matías Perego- concursó en la competencia de carteles del Festival del Nuevo Cine Latinoamericano de La Habana.

Además, es productor de "María", segundo cortometraje de la actriz y cineasta Mónica Lairana, ganador del Premio al Mejor Cortometraje Argentino de 2013, y productor ejecutivo del largometraje experimental “Mujermujer”, de Ernesto Baca, que inauguró el Primer Foco Latinoamericano de Cine en Súper 8 milímetros del 13º Buenos Aires Festival Internacional de Cine Independiente (Bafici), recibió una Mención Especial del Jurado Joven del Festival de Cine Inusual de Buenos Aires e inauguró un ciclo dedicado al cine y video experimentales organizado en el Palais de Glace de Buenos Aires.

Entre sus cortometrajes se destacan Áspero (premio a la mejor actriz en el Festival Sueños Cortos); Qué, quiénes, cómo, cuándo, dónde; Oscuro, homenaje al dibujante Alberto Breccia; Siemprenunca; Les Lunettes, filmado en la ciudad de París; Aunque estés lejos; y Cugliandolo, retrato documental de la cineasta y música argentina Daniela Cugliandolo.

A estos trabajos se suman 8cho (premio al mejor cortometraje en el Festival de Cine Independiente de Mar del Plata, menciones especiales en Festival de Cine Latinamericano de Rosario y Festival En-Transe); Planetario, corto institucional del Bafici 2010; y Champaquí (Mención especial del jurado en el Festival de Cine Inusual 2011).

También dirigió La gallina degollada, improvisación libre en base al cuento de Horacio Quiroga; La nube, filmado en la ciudad de La Habana y ganador del segundo premio del Festival Internacional de Cine Imágenes Sociales de La Rioja; Los fantasmas, corto institucional filmado a pedido del Festival de Cine hecho con Cámaras de Fotos 2012; y Vale Barcelona, producido por Arcoiris Super 8 para Toma Unica 2012, y ganador del premio al Mejor Corto Experimental del Festival Latinoamericano de Cine y Video de Rosario.

Otro de sus cortos destacados es Una forma estúpida de decir adiós. Filmado en 35 milímetros, ganador de varios premios y menciones, y nominado al Cóndor de Plata al mejor cortometraje de ficción argentino de 2004, fue convocado en 2005 por el Instituto Nacional de Cine y Artes Audiovisuales (Incaa) para ser estrenado y exhibido durante varias semanas en el Cine Gaumont Espacio Incaa Km 0, luego de lo cual también fue proyectado en 35 milímetros en el Complejo Tita Merello y en el Museo de Arte Latinoamericano de Buenos Aires (Malba)

Una forma estúpida de decir adiós obtuvo el premio al mejor cortometraje de la sección Panorama Forum del primer Festival Internacional de Jóvenes Directores de Miskolc (Hungría, 2004) y ganó sendas menciones especiales del jurado en el Festival de Cine y Video de Rosario (2005) y en el Festival Internacional Sueños Cortos (2004).

El corto compitió en la sección oficial de Buenos Aires Festival Internacional de Cine Independiente (Bacifi), Milano Film Festival (Italia), Festival de Cine de Biarritz (Francia), Festival de Beijing (China), Festival de San Pablo (Brasil), Festival ArgenKino en Berlín (Alemania), Festival de Cine de Valladolid y Festival de Cine de Tandil (Argentina), entre otros.

Pécora fue jurado de cortometrajes en el segundo Festival Internacional de Cine Independiente de Mar del Plata (Marfici), en el Festival de Cine Uncipar de Villa Gesell, en el V concurso Edgardo Chibán de la Semana de Cine Argentino en Salta, en la segunda edición del CeluFilmFest, en el Festival Tandil Cortos, en el Festival de Cine Inusual, en la Noche del Cortometraje (2009), organizada por el Instituto Nacional de Cine y Artes Audiovisuales (Incaa), y en el XI Tandil Cine, entre otros certámenes.

También fue jurado de Fipresci en el 60mo. Festival Internacional de Cine de San Sebastián (España), el Festival de Cine de Toulouse (Francia) y el Festival Internacional de Cine de Mar del Plata (2009), y jurado de Signis en el Festival Internacional de Cine de Derechos Humanos en Buenos Aires y el festival argentino europeo Pantalla Pinamar 2010. En 2011 fue jurado del Concurso Cortometrajes Terminados del Incaa.

Desde 2008 es miembro de la asociación de directores y productores independientes Proyecto de Cine Independiente (PCI).

Fue asistente de dirección en los cortos Maquillaje, de Enrico Kahn (ganador del premio MTV al Estudiante Visionario en el Festival Internacional de Cine de Tribeca), Amancay, de Milagros Mumenthaler (ganador del premio Cacho Pallero en el Festival de Huesca y de la mención especial del jurado en el Bafici 2006), Domingo a la mañana, de Andrea Urquiola, Gourmet, de Belén Barrera, y Síntomas, de Julia Zárate.

Realizó la producción fotográfica de los discos Mi tortuga Montreux, de Marcelo Ezquiaga, y El cielo acá, de Romina y los Urbanos. Algunas de sus fotos fueron publicadas en las revistas Babia y Haciendo Cine. También fue director de fotografía de algunos de sus filmes y del cortometraje Reflejo, dirigido por el artista plástico Matías Perego, y de varios de sus propios trabajos en video y Súper 8 milímetros.

Tuvo estudios básicos de fotografía en el Sindicato de Empleados de Comercio y realizó otros cursos de periodismo en el Taller Escuela Agencia (TEA) y en la Universidad de Buenos Aires, donde cursó el Taller de Agencias Periodísticas (TAP). También realizó cursos de fotografía estenopeica con distintos especialistas. En 2009 participó de un taller de cine experimental dictado por Claudio Caldini; en 2012 tomó un curso de fotografía con Rosana Ojeda y otro de cine sin cámara con el catalán Antoni Pinent; y en 2013 un taller de laboratorio fotográfico con Luján Montes.

En televisión se desempeñó en 2003 como productor periodístico y cronista del programa Canal (á) Noticias, y en 2004 como productor y director de los segmentos de noticias de MuchMusic.

También fue convocado en 2004 por el canal Ciudad Abierta, del Gobierno de la Ciudad de Buenos Aires, para dirigir el corto Etcétera, etcétera, un plano secuencia de 5 minutos para el programa Zoom Buenos Aires. 100 artistas filman la ciudad.

Dirigió videoclips para bandas como La Crus (Italia), Angela Tullida, Subsole, Los Calzones, Mi tortuga Montreux, Marcelo Ezquiaga, Romina y los Urbanos, y Juguete Ruidoso. También fue director de producción del videoclip Perro, de El Otro Yo.

Como cineasta dedicado al Super 8 milímetros, forma parte de un grupo de realizadores, artistas y fotógrafos que integran el Club del Súper 8, con quienes realizó varias proyecciones en vivo en distintos centros culturales, librerías y espacios de la ciudad de Buenos Aires. También dictó un taller de cine sin cámara durante el primer Festival de Lago Puelo, en Río Negro.

Como periodista, trabaja en la Agencia Nacional de Noticias Télam, donde se desempeña en la sección Espectáculos. Sus artículos para esa agencia fueron reproducidos por diarios como Página 12, Clarín, La Nación, La Prensa, Crónica y Buenos Aires Herald, entre otros de la Capital Federal y el interior del país. Además colabora ocasionalmente con revistas como Cinémas d'Amerique Latine del Festival de Toulouse (Francia), Haciendo Cine y Babia.

Realizó la cobertura periodística de los festivales de Cannes, Venecia, San Sebastián, La Habana, Karlovy Vary, Huelva, Toulouse, Biarritz, Islantilla, Gramado, Mar del Plata y Buenos Aires, entre otros.

Desde 2005 es miembro de la filial argentina de la Federación Internacional de la Prensa Cinematográfica (Fipresci).

Dirigió y escribió junto a Javier Rodríguez Petersen el fanzine sobre cine Dossier Negro, y trabajó como redactor y cronista del diario Crónica y las revistas Esto y Shock Policial. También realizó colaboraciones para el diario La Nación y las revistas Haciendo Cine, Hecho en Buenos Aires, Esculpiendo Milagros, Revólver, Pronto, La Mano, La Maldita, Artexto, Babia, Número Zero, Etzun (País Vasco) y Projeccions de Cinema (Cataluña), entre otras publicaciones.

Su artículo Alan Berliner-Four short films, sobre los cortos filmados por el realizador estadounidense entre 1980 y 1985, fue publicado en los libros Cine, video y multimedia: la ruptura de lo audiovisual (Libros del Rojas, Universidad de Buenos Aires, 2001) y El hombre sin la cámara. El cine de Alan Berliner (Ediciones Internacionales Universitarias de Madrid, España, 2002).

También escribió artículos y entrevistas para los libros Hacer Cine. Producción Audiovisual en América Latina (Typa-Paidós), que fue reeditado en inglés como The Film Edge. Contemporany Filmmaking in Latin América, y Cine Ojo: Un punto de vista. En el territorio de lo real (editado por el Bafici).

Otra de sus colaboraciones fue un artículo sobre la película Crónica de un niño solo incluido en el libro La memoria de los ojos. Filmografía completa de Leonardo Favio.

Con el objetivo de difundir el formato del cortometraje, organizó las muestras Diástole/Sístole, que reunió a bandas de rock y cortometrajes en torno al tema del amor, y 10 mujeres/12 cortometrajes, que reunió 10 películas de amor hechas por directoras mujeres, y que se realizó en 2006 en el Centro Cultural Rojas y en el Centro Cultural Pati Llimona de Barcelona. También colaboró con Argentoscopio, una muestra de cine argentino en Barcelona, para la cual seleccionó cortos y videos. Junto a la periodista Cynthia Sabat organizó los ciclos 10 Años/10 Cortos y 10Cortos10, cosecha 2011, ambos realizados en la Biblioteca Nacional.

En 2013 programó el ciclo Recorridos de la imagen: Cine y Video Experimental Argentino, organizado por la comisión de Experimentación Audiovisual de la Asociación de Estudios de Cine y Audiovisual (AsAECA) en la Casa de la Cultura del Fondo Nacional de las Artes (FNA).

Además fue jefe de prensa del Festival Internacional de Escuelas de Cine (Fiec) y de las películas No quiero volver a casa, de Albertina Carri, Sábado, de Juan Villegas, y Modelo 73, de Rodrigo Moscoso.
